Questions & answers

Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to what people ask us most. If yours is not here, the next conversation is a good place to bring it.

Working with us
What kind of agency is Capstan Insurance Group?

We are an independent, partner-owned agency. That means we are not tied to a single insurance company. We compare policies from many insurance carriers and recommend the one that fits your situation, not the one a parent company needs us to sell. If nothing we can offer is a good fit for you, we will tell you that too.

What does it cost to sit down with you?

The first conversation, and the work of reviewing your options, costs you nothing. When you decide to put a policy in place, the insurance carrier pays us. You do not write us a separate check for advice.

Do I have to buy anything?

No. Plenty of the people we meet leave without buying anything because they are already well covered. If that is you, we would rather say so than recommend something you do not need.

What kinds of insurance do you help with?

Mainly life insurance, disability income coverage, and long-term care. You can see the full list on our Products page, which also covers how life insurance fits into a retirement tax picture. If your question falls outside what we handle, we will point you toward someone who does.

Getting started
How do I get started?

Reach out through the contact form, call the office, or send an email. We will set up a time to talk, in person or by phone, whichever is easier for you. There is nothing to prepare in advance, though it helps to have a rough picture of your income, what you owe, and any coverage you already have.

Where are you located, and who can you work with?

Our office is in downtown Sarasota, at 242 S Washington Blvd. Florida is our home, and we also work with clients in other states. Capstan Insurance Group holds a Florida agency license (#L132362). If you are located outside Florida, please contact us and we will confirm how we can assist you.

Is my personal information kept private?

Yes. We collect only what we need to give you accurate advice, and we do not sell your information. You can read exactly how we handle it in our Privacy Policy.

About coverage
I already have coverage through work. Do I still need more?

Maybe, maybe not. Group coverage is real and worth having, but it usually has edges worth knowing: it often counts base salary only, and it typically ends the day the job does. We wrote about exactly this in Your paycheck is your biggest asset. Is it insured? Bring your benefits summary and we will read the definitions with you, in plain language.

How much life insurance do I actually need?

There is no single right number, and the popular rules of thumb often miss by a lot. It depends on what your family would need to replace, what you still owe, and what is already in place. Our worksheet, How much coverage does your family actually need?, walks through it in four numbers you can fill in with a pen.
